The Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit has formally established the National Sovereign AI Taskforce, an inter-ministerial executive committee mandated to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence and automated decision systems across the Sultanate's public sector. Operating under the direct supervision of the Council of Ministers, the taskforce brings together technical leaders from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP), and the Ministry of Economy to dismantle administrative silos and establish mandatory automation benchmarks.
The taskforce has instituted a standardized public sector AI maturity index, evaluating government agencies on algorithmic transparency, data governance, cybersecurity resilience, and measured reduction in service transaction latency. Line ministries are required to identify legacy clerical procedures suitable for end-to-end automation, with specific emphasis on licensing approvals, residency status verifications, municipal building permits, and public commercial tenders.
To support implementation, the taskforce has established a centralized Technical Advisory Bureau, providing public agencies with specialized expertise in machine learning procurement, vendor red-teaming, and model fine-tuning. The bureau ensures that all ministerial deployments integrate seamlessly with the National Open Data Portal and comply with statutory public information classification guidelines, ensuring sensitive sovereign state data remains protected against unauthorized external access.
The establishment of the taskforce reflects the Sultanate's systematic approach to institutional modernization under Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.
